Failure notifications

If backups stop and nobody is told, you think you are covered when you are not. This page explains which emails istorel sends, when, and to whom.

When an alert is sent

Two situations trigger an email: a mailbox whose backups are failing, and a mailbox with no successful backup for longer than your threshold.

The second alert covers a case the first one misses. A mailbox that is no longer backed up at all produces no failed run, so without this alert nobody would notice.

Who receives it

Account administrators receive it, each in their own language. Invited users who only see one or two mailboxes do not: they cannot fix an application password on a server they do not manage.

The email says which mailbox is affected, since when, and what to do. It contains no message content and no address book.

Setting the threshold

In the Backup supervision block, you set how long a mailbox can go without a successful backup before an alert is sent. On automatic, the threshold is twice the mailbox frequency. This catches real problems without sending alerts for a single late run.

A mailbox can have its own threshold if it needs different treatment. It then stops following the general setting.

The Monitoring block, with the threshold and the per-mailbox override.

Suspension after refusals

When a mail server refuses our credentials several times in a row, the mailbox is suspended and an email is sent. We stop connecting because a server that keeps refusing logins can block our IP address, and that same address backs up your other mailboxes.

The mailbox page then shows the reason. Enter the application password again to resume the mailbox, and the next run picks it up.
